Description

The University of North Dakota, in collaboration with UAS industry team members (Field of View, SkySkopes) and regional electric utility partners, is conducting research into best practices and methods for performing inspections of electrical powerline components and systems. Specific maintenance inspections under consideration require high resolution imaging capabilites, necessitating close-in UAS flights under structures with upward-looking sensors. Results of a sensor trade study comparing visual (RGB), multi-spectral (G, R, NIR), thermal, and corona sensors will be presented. Successful test results will be shown for flights conducted under Part 107 using the Freefly Alta 8 multi-rotor aircraft. Discussion will include future plans for enhancing capabilities to conduct flights at beyond line of sight distances.
