Aerial Vehicle Safety Solutions Inc. (AVSS) is a Canadian aerospace company commercializing software and hardware technology to enable Urban Air Mobility. AVSS’s current products are ASTM F3322-18 parachute recovery systems for commercial drones and dual-use precision payload delivery systems for last-mile delivery. AVSS’s Parachute Recovery Systems (PRS) are distributed worldwide through their more than 50 authorized dealer network and integrated directly to commercial drone manufacturers. The Precision Payload Delivery System (PPDS) is an autonomous guided parachute system to deliver mission-critical supplies to hard-to-reach locations.

 Press Releases

  • AVSS is set to complete delivery and testing of the Payload Precision Delivery Systems (PPDS) and integration into four commercial drones in March, 2022.

(New Brunswick, Canada) AVSS, a Canadian aerospace manufacturer that develops parachute recovery systems, flight termination systems, and payload precision delivery systems, is pleased to announce they have been awarded a contract from the Government of Canada to test and evaluate the PPDS.

The contract was awarded under the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) Testing Stream. This program enables Canadian government organizations to test out Canadian innovations and evaluate the technology under their own operational settings. After testing, the program also features a direct sales option, Pathway to Commercialization, for other government organizations to purchase up to $8 Million of the PPDS without procurement competition for three years.

The PPDS is a dual-use technology that enables drones, helicopters, and small airplanes to deliver critical supplies to hard-to-reach destinations where landing and take-off of an aircraft is not ideal. The PPDS is capable of autonomously reaching within 3 meters of an intended landing zone. This technology can be used for delivering medical kits for Search and Rescue operations or Meal, Ready to Eat field rations to firefighters in a Wildfire.

Transport Canada, Indigenous Services Canada, and 3 Points in Space Media will be testing and evaluating the PPDS for last-mile delivery in Northern Canada. The specific use case that is being evaluated is for drone delivery to a First Nation community that does not have the expensive infrastructure for other types of drone delivery operations.

“AVSS has been developing this technology for several years and is excited to validate the system's performance under harsh environmental conditions”, says Josh Ogden, CEO of AVSS. “When we began developing the PPDS’s autonomous guided system to prevent drone parachutes from drifting into traffic and trees, we realized that there was a major gap in the current Joint Precision Airdrop Systems (JPADS). This contract validates our assumptions and opens up a new market for our products.”

In addition to supplying 100 PPDS units in March, AVSS was also tasked with integrating the PPDS into four commercial drones. The integration into the DJI M300 RTK, DJI M600, Skyfront Perimeter 8, and Indro Wayfinder/FreeFly Systems Alta X were selected to demonstrate the flexibility in adopting the PPDS.

For more information about the PPDS, a testing video is available at https://youtu.be/LnIfR8hVIVo or you can contact AVSS directly through their website at https://www.avss.co/

ABOUT AVSS: AVSS – Aerial Vehicle Safety Solutions Inc. (AVSS) is a Canadian aerospace company commercializing drone technology for Urban Air Mobility. AVSS’s current products are ASTM F3322-18 parachute recovery systems for commercial drones, flight termination systems, and precision payload delivery systems for last-mile delivery. AVSS’s retrofit products are distributed worldwide through their more than 50 authorized dealer network and sold directly to drone manufacturers across the world.

  • AVSS has now completed the world’s first ASTM F3322-18 parachute recovery system testing for the DJI M300 RTK drone.

(SYRACUSE, NY) – AVSS – Aerial Vehicle Safety Solutions (AVSS), with support from the third-party testing agency NUAIR, is proud to announce that they have completed the ASTM F3322-18 testing requirements for the DJI M300 RTK. Completing this testing aligns with the new rules announced earlier this year that require emergency parachute recovery systems for certain types of flights for commercial operations in the USA, Europe, and India. Now, global drone operators of the DJI M300 RTK who integrate the parachute recovery system from AVSS can legally and safely fly over people and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS).

For AVSS’s parachute recovery system to be compliant with the ASTM F3322-18 International standard, the company had to complete rigorous safety and failure scenarios over three days at the New York UAS Test Site in Rome, New York. The 45 successful tests on the DJI M300 RTK demonstrate the reliability and performance of AVSS’s Parachute Recovery System, referenced as the PRS-M300.

AVSS is now the first parachute recovery system company in the world to pass this testing standard on the DJI M300 RTK. The successful completion of this industry-leading standard also comes at a perfect time for global operators of the DJI M300 RTK. AVSS has also commenced shipping the PRS-M300 to their more than 40 authorized dealers across the world this week too. For more information on where to purchase the PRS-M300 from an authorized dealer, please visit http://www.avss.co/partners.

“It was great working with AVSS again and I’m happy we were able to successfully validate their product for this commercial platform,” said Tony Basile, chief operations officer at NUAIR. “Our crew at the New York UAS Test Site has these validation tests down pat, making the whole process effortless and cost-effective for our clients.”

“When AVSS needed to complete the ASTM standard for the DJI M300 RTK drone, NUAIR was an obvious choice to partner with again. Working with the NUAIR team ensures that our customers know we’ve partnered with the premier FAA-designated test site and our parachute recovery system is properly validated. As we continue integrating our various parachute recovery system models into commercial drones and drone delivery platforms, we look forward to continuing this partnership. (Josh Ogden, CEO).”

    ABOUT ASTM F3322-18

The ASTM consensus standard was developed by industry stakeholders as well as representatives from the FAA in late 2018 after more than a year of work. The completion of the ASTM F3322-18 testing with NUAIR, along with the required engineering analysis, has also been acknowledged by the FAA as a key test to reduce drastically reduce flight hour requirements for Part 135 applicants in their Durability and Reliability Testing, by Transport Canada as a means of compliance for the DJI M300 RTK series for operations over people, and is the most robust level of assurance for M2 mitigations by EASA.

    ABOUT AVSS:

Founded in 2017, AVSS – Aerial Vehicle Safety Solutions Inc. (AVSS) is a Canadian aerospace company commercializing safety and parachute technologies for Urban Air Mobility. AVSS’s current products are parachute recovery systems for commercial drones and precision delivery systems for last-mile delivery. AVSS’s parachute recovery system products are integrated as post-production retrofit solutions for commercial off-the-shelf drones and OEM solutions for commercial drone manufacturers.

    ABOUT NUAIR:

NUAIR, which manages the FAA-designated New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss International Airport in Rome, NY, which is owned by Oneida County, put the AVSS product through 45 functionality tests across five different failure scenarios. The tests were successful, proving that the AVSS product complies with the ASTM International standard specification for small UAS parachutes, allowing AVSS to fulfill their presales for this product that were dependent on this safety validation.
