Transportation Research Board


Richard Cunard, P.E. is the Engineer of Traffic and Operations for the Transportation Research Board. In this position, Mr. Cunard is concerned with all aspects of transportation systems management and operations, including: Automated and connected vehicles; Intelligent Transportation Systems; Freeway and highway operations; traffic control systems; managed lanes; etc.

Before joining TRB, Mr. Cunard was previously Associate Executive Director and Director of Engineering for the Traffic Improvement Association, Michigan. In addition, he was the Director of Transportation and Right-of-way for the City of Rochester Hills, Michigan and he was also employed with the transportation consulting firm Goodell-Grivas, Inc.

Mr. Cunard is a registered engineer and a graduate of Wayne State University with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering.

He is a member of various professional societies and serves as a member of the Coordinating Council for the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
