Dr. Virginia (Suzy) Young is a Director in the Office for Research and Economic Development at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). She is responsible for identifying funding opportunities and partnerships to increase the success of research at the University. She manages large, long term, multi-agency and multi-discipline grants and contracts and promotes networking strategies to connect partners and contacts that represent potential funding sources for University investigators. Previously, she was the Vice Chancellor for Research for the University of Alabama (UA) System where she worked with the Chancellor and Board of Trustees, administrators and research faculty at UA, UA Birmingham (UAB) and UAH to strengthen and broaden research initiatives and partnerships across the three universities. Before joining the UA System in 2011, Dr. Young worked for over 29 years in the United States Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC), Redstone Arsenal, in various leadership positions. As the Director for Aviation and Missile Science & Technology, the Director of the Advanced Science and Technology Directorate, and the Deputy Director for the Center she managed the science and technology budget lines for missile and aviation to include Army Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). She conducted research initially on Unmanned Ground Vehicles/Systems (UGV) for the Army, working closely with her Navy counterparts to conduct a joint exercise for armed ground robots.
