Description

Understanding drone airspace rules below 400 feet can be challenging. Conditions change, TFRs take effect and local guidance can cause confusion. But if every operator could easily check and clearly know their airspace status before they fly, every time, the National Airspace System (NAS) would become exponentially safer for all. That’s the goal of the public private partnership between the FAA and Kittyhawk IO with the new B4UFLY mobile app. B4UFLY is a key tool in the FAA’s safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). It empowers recreational, commercial, and government drone operators with real-time airspace restriction data based on search at any location in the United States. Partnership with Kittyhawk IO, at no cost to taxpayers, brought a new version of the app to iOS and Android in July 2019. In the first 10 weeks of launch, the app performed more than 1 million airspace searches and reviews improved from 1 star to 4 stars. This discussion with Jon Hegranes, CEO, Kittyhawk IO and Erik Amend, Manager, Executive Office, FAA UAS Integration Office will provide attendees with firsthand insights into: The development process and why the FAA embraced product best practices like beta testing and design thinking; The launch strategy including user education, adoption and performance metric; What the future of the partnership holds; and why public private partnerships are essential to building trust and safety for the industry.
