Velodyne Lidar

San Jose,  CA
United States
  • Booth: 956

Velodyne is known worldwide for its portfolio of breakthrough lidar sensor technologies. Velodyne’s Founder and CEO, David Hall, invented real-time surround view lidar systems in 2005 as part of Velodyne Acoustics. His invention revolutionized perception and autonomy for automotive, new mobility, mapping, robotics, and security.

 Press Releases

  • Integrators are playing an important role in commercializing next generation autonomous solutions that use lidar technology.

Lidar News posted a story on the introduction of the Automated with Velodyne program, where Velodyne helps integrators by supporting and promoting innovation that uses Velodyne lidar sensors, and creating lasting customer and business relationships.

The article quoted Vikrant Aggarwal, President of Local Motors, saying:

“We’re constantly improving the passenger experience within Olli. Our manufacturing model enables us to test and add the latest and greatest technology such as Velodyne’s lidar solutions. Their team was instrumental in providing safety-inspired, breakthrough lidar technology to ensure our passengers have the best mobility experience possible. In being a part of the Automated with Velodyne program, we are able to work collaboratively with the Velodyne team for global promotional efforts.”

Another story – in Yahoo! Finance – noted the Automated with Velodyne program currently has close to 40 partners. The article quoted Jon Barad, Velodyne’s vice president of business development, saying:

“In this new era of autonomy, we are seeing exciting new uses of our lidar every day. These innovations have the potential to improve peoples’ lives in so many ways, including in efficiency, access to products and services, and safety. We are committed to working closely with this wonderfully diverse ecosystem to not only help deliver high-quality solutions, but to also support their business growth.”

Other media that covered this news include aftermarketNewsAutomotive WorldGeospatial World and Unmanned Systems Technology.

Keep an eye on the integrator community as they continue to use Velodyne’s lidar technologies to build industry solutions in a variety of application areas. These include advanced driver assistance (ADAS), autonomous vehicles, mapping, industrial, smart city, drone/unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), robotics and security.

  • One of the top challenges in developing autonomous vehicles is addressing where computer hardware and software need to work together to solve problems. Ed Brown, Associate Editor of the magazine Photonics & Imaging Technology, a publication of Tech Briefs Media Group, interviewed Velodyne Lidar CEO Anand Gopalan to discuss lidar software for ADAS and autonomous vehicles. For instance, Velodyne is developing Vella™, breakthrough advanced driver assistance software based on the directional view Velarray™ sensor.

The Photonics & Imaging Technology interview included discussion of the primary goals of lidar software such as “to increase the speed of response and optimize efficient use of computational resources.”

The conversation also covered the challenge of “corner cases” for autonomous vehicles. As an example, the article cited, “a taxi pulling back into traffic after dropping a passenger at the curb.” Anand noted, “There are a lot of critical corner scenarios that autonomous vehicles have to deal with, which require a lot more innovation in software, sensor, and computing hardware.”

In the interview, Anand addressed “the problem of near-field sensing,” an issue Velodyne is developing sensors to address. He noted, as examples, “a bicyclist alongside a turning vehicle or a ball rolling into the street. These kinds of situations require software to provide improved classification of objects and prediction of behavior.”

  • Ultra Puck

  • Velodyne Lidar’s Ultra Puck is a best-in-class 360-degree horizontal field-of-view (FoV) sensor that combines long range performance with outstanding resolution and point density in a compact form factor. It is the first and most widely used, 200 m sensor in the autonomous systems market. It also has the highest vertical FoV, which supports a wide variety of road and traffic scenarios. It’s denser channel distribution at the horizon enables higher resolution at longer ranges.

Developed with automotive applications in mind, the Ultra Puck is a sensor of choice for urban and suburban autonomous vehicle fleets, with substantial internal and fleet validation. With a combination of optimal power and high performance, this sensor provides distance and calibrated reflectivity measurements at all rotational angles. Advanced software features allow for power management, firing exclusion zones and laser interference mitigation.

The Ultra Puck is encapsulated in a well-designed package that allows for operation over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions, without the need for active cooling. The sensor uses proven, 905 nm, Class 1 eye-safe technology and is assembled in Velodyne’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. The use of readily available, off-the-shelf components enables scalability and attractive pricing for automotive volumes. Like other Velodyne sensors, the Ultra Puck has world-class technical support available across North America, Europe & Asia from the world’s leading lidar company.

  • Puck LITE

  • Velodyne Lidar’s Puck LITE is our lightest sensor - specially designed for applications that require a lower weight. Aside from the weight, the Puck LITE has identical performance to the Puck. It has a range of 100 m and generates up to ~600,000 points/second, across a 360° horizontal field of view and a 30° vertical field of view.

A compact footprint and an industry leading weight for a lidar sensor with high resolution makes the Puck LITE ideal for UAV/drone and mobile applications in the areas of 3D mapping/imaging, inspection and navigation. The Puck LITE has best-in-class power, which enables operation over a wide temperature range. It's use of off-the-shelf components enables enhanced scalability and attractive volume pricing. Like other Velodyne sensors, the Puck has world-class technical support available across North America, Europe & Asia from the world’s leading lidar company.
