  • Ampex Data Systems (Ampex), a Delta Information Systems Company, is proud to announce the award of a firm fixed price contract in support of the Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division (NAWCWD) located in Ridgecrest, California (China Lake). Ampex’s contract provides NAWCWD full rate production of Ampex’s low-cost TuffCORD ruggedized network attached storage (NAS) device, part of the Ampex TuffServ product line. The TuffCORD will be used to store test data generated onboard aircraft during flight test operations.


    Ampex built the U.S. Navy’s first, dedicated, flight test instrumentation data storage device in 1950. Today, Ampex is known for manufacturing the fastest ruggedized network file servers in the industry and supports various U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy programs. Most notably, Ampex provides the network file servers and boot computers that are the digital backbone of the U.S. Navy’s E-2 C/D Hawkeye fleet.


    The new contract with the Navy represents yet another major milestone for Ampex and the defense industry. This is Ampex’s first production run of a network-based recording device for Department of Defense (DoD) flight test instrumentation. Today, most onboard flight test recording devices are still direct attached storage systems only capable of recording and playback. Ampex has pioneered the use of NAS systems (servers) for flight test recording with its unparalleled Ampex Common Compute Environment (ACCE) software. ACCE helps customers take advantage of the network file server capabilities inherent in Ampex NAS devices. With ACCE, customers can use an Ampex NAS to execute software-defined recording (software replicates what hardware used to), index stored data for easier access and post-mission analysis, and integrate third-party software on the device. Ampex will complete work at its Silicon Valley headquarters in Hayward, CA.

  • Ampex Data Systems has recently delivered the first miniRv2 Solid State Recorder to the Air Force in support of flight test operations. Although Ampex’s original miniR700 Data Acquisition and Storage Device is still a staple in the flight test community, the new miniRv2 adds network file server capability that allows for traditional, IRIG106 Chapter 10 recording and network centric topologies (iNET, IENA, DAR capable).

    The miniRv2 provides the same SWaP as the original at less cost and also maintains the backward compatibility of the original’s data acquisition modules, so customers can still use them with the new version – more cost savings! Finally, the miniRv2 adds a new Intel Atom CPU, a new multiplexer, higher speed interfaces, and the Ampex Common Compute Environment (ACCE). ACCE is the most feature rich software suite for data acquisition and management in the industry.

  • Ampex Data Systems (Ampex), a Delta Information Systems Company, is proud to announce the signing of a Long-Term Agreement (LTA) contract with Collins Aerospace. Collins Aerospace will deliver the E-2D Aircraft Training Systems under contract to the U.S. Navy. In addition to multiple TuffServ®282 (TS282) Rugged Network File Servers (NFS), Ampex will be delivering supporting storage media for use in the United States Navy’s E-2D Hawkeye trainers. Ampex will supply multiple shipset systems over a three year period.

    The U.S. Navy’s E-2D Hawkeye is an airborne early warning and command and control aircraft system that provides expanded battlespace awareness for carrier-strike groups. Its two-generation leap in radar technology allows the E-2D to work with ship-, air- and land-based combat systems to track and defeat air, ship and cruise missiles at extended range. Furthermore, the E-2D can also be used as a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief aircraft for civilian emergency coordination.

    Known as the fastest ruggedized Network File Servers on the market, Ampex’s TuffServ Series is engineered to perform in extreme airborne, ground, and space environments. Built for rugged environments with MIL-STD power and connectors, the TS282 meets the real-world needs of operators with features such as built-in power hold up, a front-panel display to help identify and resolve anomalies, two media types to allow for different data sources, and service features to facilitate maintenance.   •  Ampex Data Systems, a division of Delta Information Systems Inc., announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Airbus Defense and Space to supply TuffServ222 (TS222) Multi-channel Video Recorders, in support of the Government of Canada’s Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue Aircraft Replacement (FWSAR) project.

    The CC-295 variant of the Airbus C-295 will be the new FWSAR aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force, replacing the CC-115 Buffalo and the legacy CC-130H Hercules fleets. The turbo-prop C-295 is in use in 28 countries, mostly for military transport, but also for maritime/overland surveillance and anti-submarine warfare.

    Ampex’s TS222 Video Recorder records, encodes, reproduces and streams SD & HD-SDI video with embedded metadata. The TS222 Video Recording System is designed to support simultaneous recording, reproduction, and streaming of both high-definition and standard-definition video. For this project, the TS222 will include capabilities such as multiple input and output video interfaces, additional video channels, and slow-motion replay at different speeds.

    Designed for Information Assurance

    Performance and Capacity

    Gigabit Ethernet has become the default networking technology for onboard data storage applications, and the TuffCORD provides two 1000Base-T interfaces, as well as expansion capability for options for video and other bus types, including MIL-STD-1553B, CAN bus, and even WiFi networking.

    To support this range of interfaces, the TuffCORD provides a single high-capacity, high performance removable memory module, with capacities from 240GB to 4000GB (4TB) and higher, as memory technology matures. The memory modules leverage rugged COTS media solutions, further qualified by AMPEX to meet the requirements of challenging programs.

    Each memory module offers raw performance in excess of 250MB/second sustained, providing a recording duration of more than four hours even at the maximum operational rate.

    Open System, Trusted Environments

    The heart of the TuffCORD is a standardized, rugged pluggable processing module, integrating the CPU with memory and conventional I/O interfaces such as PCI Express, USB, Ethernet and serial ports. This module facilitates product reliability and long-term supply by isolating the intricacies of the CPU from the overall system; as technology evolves, alternative modules can be used without changing the system’s internal and external interfaces.

    Two CPU models are available, each a member of the Intel AtomTM “Bay Trail-I” family. Both CPUs feature 64 bit processing and, critically, the “AES New Instructions”. Using validated software modules, this capability facilitates high-speed encryption and decryption in accordance with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES, FIPS 197) and therefore a part of a FIPS 140-2 solution.

    Expansion and Options

    The TuffCORD is designed to be flexible and versatile. In addition to the dual gigabit Ethernet interfaces, the system is designed to support expansion for additional interfaces, including more Ethernet interfaces, MIL-STD-1553B, and even WiFi networking. The storage module has been designed to be modular, so that additional or different storage media types can be provided as required. As with all AMPEX products, a complete ecosystem is available including ground support equipment to facilitate data transfer to and from the recording media.


    VIDEO & IMAGERY
    The TuffCORD is purpose built for mission data recording to include giving customers the ability to record both compressed and uncompressed video in a single, rugged, network file server. Uncompressed HD-SDI video has become increasingly more desired for precision video analysis and real-time decision-making. With an HD-SDI interface and a market leading Delta Digital Video encoder (H.264/ H.265), the TuffCORD gives users the benefits of both uncompressed video (best quality for analysis) and compressed video (downlink/uplink and ease of management).
    EW & RF
    The TuffCORD helps customers satisfy their lower cost EW data storage needs. At just over 5lbs and 109 cubic inches, the TuffCORD still packs a punch with 4 terabytes of storage and speeds up to 250 MB/sec.
    MISSION COMPUTERS & STORAGE
    Although designed as a mission data recorder (video, MIL-STD 1553, 1760, ARINC-429, etc) the TuffCord can also serve as a mission computer for systems requiring lower cost and lighter weight.  The heart of the TuffCORD is a standardized, rugged pluggable processing module, integrating the CPU with memory and conventional I/O interfaces such as PCI Express, USB, Ethernet and serial ports.     FLIGHT TEST
    Many flight test data acquisition and storage operations do not require the high speed and high capacity of the top-of-the-line TuffServ product. For these scenarios, the TuffCORD is a solid solution. At a lower cost, the TuffCORD has the versatility required to store a wide variety of flight test data.  When married with Ampex’s AMux Data Acquisition Unit, the TuffCORD provides a flexible, lower cost means of executing flight test operations.

    The miniRv2 Solid State Recorder is a P3I update to the original miniR700 with the same SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power), but with dramatic increases in throughput speed, storage, and user configuration flexibility. The system refresh includes a new Intel Atom CPU, lower cost solid state removable memory, new multiplexer, higher speed interfaces, Ampex ACCE Management Software, and full backwards compatibility to the existing I/O module interfaces. This provides existing users compatibility with their existing data interfaces from the Ampex miniR700, AMux 600 & AMux 700 Multiplexers.

    Besides the breadth of I/O interfaces offered for traditional instrumentation sources such as serial, SD/HD Video, MIL-STD-1553B, Analog, Firewire, Gigabit Ethernet, etc, the new miniRv2 can be configured with a new PCIe I/O interfaces for higher-speed modules to be released, and/or an additional PCIe CPU. The base mini-recorder unit now includes Gigabit Ethernet and the Power Filter as standard. The new lower cost solid state mRMM (mini Removable Memory Module) features a USB3.0 interface to the system bus, as well as a direct download from the mRMM to a user laptop or server. The mRMM is similar to that used in other Ampex Network Attached Storage (NAS) TuffServ product lines. Initial released memory capacities range from 64GB to 1TB+. Ampex will release various mRMM storage and performance options over time for customer applications.

    Future enhancements will include option for configuring a Radiation Tolerant (RT) watchdog monitor for new space applications and custom interfaces to meet unique customer requirements.

    VIDEO & IMAGERY

    The miniRv2 is the ultimate video recording and storage device in terms of video data acquisition and modularity. As many as 8 video I/O modules or “slices” can be added to the minirRv2’s base unit for multiple video inputs of varying types in a single system.  This includes DVI, HD-SDI, RGB, LVDS, and SD among others.  Modules are added to, or removed from, the external side of the miniRv2’s base unit. There is no need to crack open the “guts” of the system.  The video I/O modules can also be mixed with non-video modules for acquiring other signals like 1553, ARINC 429, or PCM. The miniRv2 also includes storage via its integrated network file server (NFS).  The NFS capabilities makes the miniRv2 capable of traditional flight test recording via the IRIG 106 Chapter 10 format as well as network centric topologies (iNET, IENA, and DAR capable).

    EW & RF SIGNALS

    The miniRv2 adds a level of modularity some customers are seeking in an EW data storage device. In addition to being a network attached storage system, as many as 8 I/O modules or “slices” can be added to the minirRv2’s base unit for multiple inputs of varying types. Users can record EW data and other data types in the same device. If changes are required, modules can be added to, or removed from, the external side of the miniRv2’s base unit. There is no need to crack open the “guts” of the system.

    FLIGHT TEST

    The decades old, original miniR700 continues to be a staple in the flight test acquisition and storage community (traditional IRIG 106 CH10).  Now, the updated miniRv2 brings that proven, trusted capability into the 21st century.  Most notably, the miniRv2 retains the ability to externally add its data acquisition modules for various flight test data types (original modules still work on the new version), but now it is a network attached storage system with network file server (NFS) capability. As an NFS, the miniRv2 can perform software defined recording with the Ampex Common Compute Environment (ACCE) software and handle network centric topologies (iNET, IENA, DAR capable) in addition to running a customer’s third-party software.
