SnotBot - Drones for Wildlife Conservation
Thursday, October 08, 2020: 9:45 AM - 10:30 AM
Oceanography, due to its high cost, has long been a prerogative of the privileged. Drones and their accompanying sensors are changing the way that we collect data and monitor and harvest our ocean's potential. As we look to the new blue economy, drones above, below and on the water will be pivotal tools. This talk will focus on the wildlife conservation perspective where funding never seems to match the challenges. Finally, we have tools that are democratizing science because they are field-friendly, user-friendly, replicable, scalable and affordable. SnotBot is a case study on thinking outside the box. From our Kickstarter campaign with Sir Patrick Stewart to the name SnotBot, we have broken down traditional barriers to whale and ocean research. It is an example of how the rapidly evolving field of drones, sensors and AI are going to radically change humanity's relationship with our oceans – oceans upon which we are ever more dependent for survival.
