Most sUAS available today are battery powered. There are many types of battery chemistry, composition, and manufacture – each with advantages and disadvantages. Work being done to increase the energy density, output current capability, and increase reliability/safety is one of the leading change agents to unlock the full potential of sUAS. AiRXOS, part of GE Aviation, has a flight operations team that has been investigating sUAS battery technologies for use in advanced sUAS operations for our customers. We will present results of that research, which includes types of batteries, how to properly select the best battery for a given application, safe charge, maintenance, storage, and DOT compliant shipping. With so many options available, and ongoing advancements daily, it is beneficial to understand the science behind the power source for sUAS, enabling you to unlock its full potential for your application, while minimizing costs and maximizing safety.
