Using LiDAR Technology: Avalanche Documentation
Thursday, October 08, 2020: 1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
The abundant snowfalls at the beginning of 2019 in Austria triggered a series of avalanche events. One of them was the ice avalanche in Ramsau, Tyrol, Austria which devastated the complete dining hall of a hotel in mid-January. In order to check the hazard zone, planning and adjusting it if necessary, the avalanche dynamics had to be traced from the starting point to the village of Ramsau. This required a digital surface model of the snow cover accurate to centimeters. With the help of a UAV-based laser scanner, which is optimized for the measurement on snow and ice based on the usage of an ideal wavelength and 360° field of view, it allowed the technicians to understand the exact avalanche dynamics coming from steep snow slopes directly after the event.
