FAA Type Certification for UAS: The New Durability and Reliability Means of Compliance
Wednesday, October 07, 2020: 1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
There is significant interest from industry and the FAA to have a standard practice to support the new Durability and Reliability means of compliance for Type Certification of UAS under 55 lbs. Type Certification is required to conduct Part 135 operations. The FAA has stated that publication of this standard is needed by the sunset of the DOT UAS Integration Pilot Program in October 2020. The FAA released “DURABILITY & RELIABILITY-BASED TYPE CERTIFICATION PROCESS FOR LOW RISK SMALLER UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS - MEANS OF COMPLIANCE.” This process requires an applicant to show compliance in three areas: air system durability and reliability flight demonstrations, likely failure and specific demonstration tests, and a design requirements checklist. ASTM is developing a standard to provide industry best practices for conducting flight demonstrations and providing evidence to satisfy this means of compliance.
