Profile
Michelle L Root is the Director of the Office of Investigations within the Office of Security and Hazardous Materials Safety (ASH). As Director, Ms. Root is responsible for ensuring AXI provides professional internal investigative and analytical services. She oversees the internal administrative investigations program, technical cyber and forensics investigations and analysis of FAA systems, the Insider Threat Detection and Mitigation Program (ITDMP), the Defensive Counter Intelligence Program (DCIP), the International Travel Security Program, the electronic-Discovery program and the sUAS Forensic program. Ms. Root has extensive experience in the investigative arena and over a decade in the management and leadership of such programs.
In August 1992, Ms. Root began her career in Security as a Special Agent/Criminal Investigator with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI). Ms. Root worked in several specialties including general crime, the drug unit, procurement fraud, and counterintelligence. In June 1998, Ms. Root transferred to the FAA as the Program Manager for the Drug Interdiction Support Program later renamed the Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP). At the same time, she was working criminal and administrative investigations involving violations of federal laws, policies, regulations, and orders. Following 9/11, Ms. Root transferred into the internal investigations section, where she remained until promoted in 2007 as the FLM for the Investigations Section. In 2012, she promoted again to the Branch Manager, overseeing the investigations, infrastructure security, and personnel security sections. In 2013, Ms. Root, became the Division Manager for Investigations, managing both the internal investigations and the LEAP branches for the 13 most western states including Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam. In 2017, during the most recent restructure, Ms. Root was selected as the Executive Director for the newly established Office of Investigations.
