    Please check out our new eCompass series, a strap-down electronic compass designed specifically for users requiring high accuracy, low power consumption, and user-friendly calibration and compensation.  This evolutionary device advances the state-of-the-art in magnetic compassing.  It combines a precision 3-axis solid-state magnetometer and a rugged 2-axis electrolytic tilt sensor to provide accurate heading and tilt measurements over a wide range of environmental conditions.  The firmware and signal processing algorithms will deliver the ultimate in performance from the available sensor data.

    An additional key advantage of our electronic compass is its quick-connect, external serial interface.  Among the host of user definable operating parameters is the selection of NMEA output data and update rate; operating mode as continuous or query-only; and angle data in degrees, mils, radians, or 16-bit integer. 

    Typical applications include antenna positioning, automobile recovery, dead reckoning, directional drilling and mining, farming, GPS systems requiring azimuth, marine electronics, navigation and attitude reference, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), robotics and material handling, surveying equipment, and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).

  • Most of the features are the same as the ECV and the eIMU is especially used for dead reckoning application. The firmware operates at a fixed data rate of 50 Hz and sends a block of binary data per the specification that Jewell provided. The binary data sentence is designed to provide a large amount of data at high data rates. It is also used to eliminate the need for ASCII-to-binary conversions. Default baud rate for the IMU version is 57600

    eCompass Capabilities

    The eCompass series includes four different models, each with a specific combination of tilt sensors, magnetometers, gyroscopes, quick connect, external serial interfaces, and accelerometers with RS-232, RS-485 or TTL output types. Each model is available in an economical plastic enclosure with an 8 pin, single-row, 0.1" friction header, 6 pin RJ12 modular jack. For rugged requirements, an aluminum enclosure with a circular, 6-pin female connector is an option for each model as well. Among the host of user definable operating parameters is the selection of NMEA output data and update rate; operating mode as continuous or query-only; and angle data in degrees, mils, radians, or 16-bit integers.

    Jewell Instruments is pleased to announce the introduction of the ECV series, a strap-down electronic compass designed specifically for commercial, industrial and military users requiring high accuracy, repeatability, and low power consumption in dynamic environments. The ECV series is the latest addition to Jewell family of electronic compasses that have a time-tested reputation for quality and performance.

    An enhanced version of the ECS series, the ECV features a sensor suite which includes precision 3-axis MEMS rotation rate, acceleration and magnetic sensors, and a dual-axis electrolytic tilt sensor (for the ultimate in near-level accuracy). All 11 sensor measurements are calibrated over a -50° to 110°C temperature range and are aligned in three dimensions. In addition to azimuth output, all raw and calibrated measurements are available at up to 28 readings per second. Rate gyro measurements rotated to the inertial frame of reference are also available. Independent complementary filters for pitch, roll, and azimuth can be adjusted for the user’s requirements.

    The recommended applications for the ECV are manned and unmanned aerial and underwater vehicles, robotics, weather buoys, antenna positioning, platform stabilization, excavation machinery, and irrigation equipment.

    Adding the ECV series is an important step forward for our electronic compass product line. The implementation provides important new features: the three-axis accelerometer and 3 axis gyros.

  • The JDI-100/200 inclinometer series has been expanded! This single or dual axis inclinometer is now available with DB9, Pigtail, Deutsch, Double Deutsch, 6-Pin Circular (C06), or M12 connectors. The robust and rugged design is great for industrial use, yet includes the low-cost MEMS technology. In addition to RS-232 and RS-485, the JDI now offers ASCII and MODBUS digital outputs. This positions Jewell’s flagship product as a more versatile digital tilt sensor for numerous applications.

    Jewell introduced the JDI-100/200 with a DB9 connection in 2017 as its first product to feature full temperature compensation across all measuring ranges with 0.005° accuracy, ±1° to ±60° measuring ranges and 0.0001° resolution. It is also RoHS compliant to satisfy environmental standards.

    With a lightweight aluminum enclosure and an IP67 seal (when mated to an IP67 connector), the JDI can serve many OEM and industrial applications. It can be used for industrial automation and control, construction and agricultural equipment, solar tracking, mobile cranes, platform leveling and positioning, mobile radar equipment, bridge monitoring and more.
