Description

The FAA recently identified "Associated Elements", or AE, as services, functions or capabilities (SFCs) which support complex UAS operations but exist outside of the drone itself (e.g. communications links and ground control stations). FAA guidance is that AE do not need to go through the type-cert process but will need to meet additional safety assurance requirements associated with their use. Once these requirements have been met, however, the FAA has opened up a path to scalability by enabling the repeated use of AE with similar craft/operations. This will enable a successful safety case, which uses AE to mitigate appropriate risks and hazards, to be reused by additional operators or taken to new locations with similar risk profiles. This panel will dive into the recent FAA Memo and explore what these AE make look like, such as UAS Traffic Management, and explore the given FAA requirements and associated considerations.
