Engineering What's Next
General Digital Corporation is the industry leader in software development, verification, and validation of autonomous flight systems, having worked on over 70 aircraft in the past few decades. We provide a full range of engineering services, including rugged hardware and display systems such as drone controllers. AS9100D Certification on track for Summer '22.
Back in November, our very own Mike Mendoza earned the title of Certified IPC Specialist by completing the Application Specialist course on IPC J-STD-001: Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies.
An impressive achievement in its own right, Mike has built on this by completing the Space Applications Electronic Hardware Addendum to IPC J-STD-001. Mike’s new certification, coupled with our upcoming AS9100D certification, gives our facility the power to produce hardware for space applications, which we are currently designing in support of an upcoming NASA program.
“Mike’s one of our best employees, but he’s an even better guy,” noted Anthony Picone, our Production Manager. “He really went above and beyond to support this program, and I’m really excited to see the cool stuff that we’re going to work on in the next few years.”
Our team is honored to work on the space program. For more information about this announcement, or to speak with someone about your engineering requirements on or off Earth, Contact Us or call (860) 282-2900 today
In 1973, our company was founded by Len Lazar, a Software Engineer, and Russ Reiss, an Electrical Engineer. As the business grew, the two divisions found success in different markets (avionics for software, defense for hardware), though occasionally collaborated on projects as necessary (e.g., our GenStar). In recent years, as technology continues to advance, we’ve seen increased demand for products requiring customization in hardware as well as embedded firmware.
To best manage these exciting new projects, we’ve organized a team of Embedded Systems Engineers. Our Embedded Systems Engineering team is a diverse group of focused, experienced electrical, software development, and IV&V test engineers who possess the flexibility to tackle almost any engineering project—from product conceptualization to production delivery, and anywhere in between.
“I couldn’t be more excited about the future of our organization,” remarked General Digital President Bryan Gudrian. “Although our hardware and software teams have collaborated on a number of projects in the past, the formation of this group will break down some internal barriers and allow for better cross-departmental collaboration to improve speed and quality.”
What is ESE?
Our Embedded Systems Engineering function consists of the following elements:
Combined with the robust mechanical, optical, and production engineering expertise of our Display Systems group, the creation of ESE furthers our ability to become a true one-stop shop for any engineering requirement.
Along with the formation of this group, we are also in the process of pursuing AS9100 and ISO 13485 certifications to complement our existing ISO 9001:2015 certification. This effort, on track for completion later this year, will expand our capabilities in the design, development, prototyping, independent verification and validation, and serial production of aerospace, avionic, and medical devices.
Some recent examples of products developed by our Embedded Systems Engineering team include:
We’re thrilled to share this news with you, and believe that the formation of this group alongside our new certifications will continue to allow our organization to reach new heights by continuing to do what we do best—turn problems into solutions.

This July, East Hartford Mayor Marica Leclerc stopped by to celebrate our company’s recent move back to East Hartford, our original hometown.
While we hoped to have an event like this when we moved in June ’20, the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic prohibited us from doing so. We originally scheduled the event for the end of June ’21, but a contractor knocked out power to our building while repairing a nearby line, forcing us to again reschedule.
As critical suppliers for essential industries, including defense, medical, and heavy industrial/nuclear, we remained fully operational even during the worst of the pandemic with a split of on-site production staff and a remote office staff. Thankfully, our COVID protocols (and extra 20,000 sq. ft.) helped prevent any outbreaks within our employee ranks.
This ceremony served as a celebration of moving into the new facility, successfully navigating through the pandemic with minimal impacts, and a re-opening of our facility to visitors.
About the Move
When the lease for our previous location in South Windsor came up for renewal, we made a strategic decision to find a newer and larger building to accommodate our growing business. By staying local, we were able to retain all our employees while still being able to attract top talent from the region’s diverse manufacturing pool.
Our tenured employees appreciate that the new building is just a few miles down the road from our old one, while our customers appreciate the more modern facility. We also made a significant investment in capital equipment coinciding with the move, which has seen us optimize processes and greatly increase our production capacity since moving last year.
We look forward to continuing to serve you from our new home at 60 Prestige Park Rd in East Hartford, CT.

General Digital Corporation, the innovator of flat panel displays, is thrilled to introduce the Tactical TwoView™ (TTV) as the warfighter’s choice for their next generation of rugged workstations.
Slated for deployment in major defense programs, the TTV family of workstations is one of the first commercially available dual monitor solutions certified to MIL-STD 810-G and is designed so that all major components are field-replaceable in under ten minutes using only common hand tools, minimizing any potential downtime of this mission-critical workstation.
“General Digital has been at the forefront of technological innovation for defense applications for nearly 50 years,” noted Bryan Dunn, VP of Business Development, Display Systems Division at General Digital. “As technology rapidly changes, so do the needs of our warfighters. We’ve listened closely to our military and prime contractor customers and developed what I feel is one of our most innovative products since our SlimLine series revolutionized compact workstations all the way back in 1992. The Tactical TwoView fits seamlessly into the DoD’s modernization strategy of using open systems architecture to support the next-generation warfighter.”
The Tactical TwoView’s modular design allows for highly customizable configurations to suit your specific requirements and comes in three primary variations:
The TTV Shelter™ variant bolts directly onto the workstation surface of any mobile command shelter, providing a dual monitor solution in the same footprint as the existing single monitor set up. During transit, the TTV folds and locks in place making suitable for high-shock environments.
The TTV Mobile™ variant, which is field-deployable, is stable enough to work on any horizontal surface such as command tent folding tables and is stored inside its own integrated transit case. This unique self-contained case provides an IP65 (ingress protection) rating against dust and water.
The TTV RackMount™ variant features an identical interface and computer to the other two variants, making it ideal for compact areas that require a rugged rack mounted workstation. The standard unit currently fits into a 24" rack but is customizable to suit your application.
All TTVs use a series of locking mechanisms to allow users to set the display to their preferred viewing angle while securing the large LCD panels against high-shock events.
By utilizing video over USB-C, the TTV sends power, video, and communication over a single cable instead of several which reduces complexity and maintenance time. General Digital developed a custom video controller to support the TTV family which helps futureproof the system by allowing in service updates as customers adjust to new requirements or technological innovations.
The TTV’s integrated computer system connects to its host server through a gigabit ethernet or wireless connection, reducing operator vulnerability by allowing the entire workstation to be remote from the rest of the computing equipment. The integrated computer supports two independent video feeds on the displays while allowing the keyboard and trackball to provide inputs to the host server.
The Tactical TwoView is available in a variety of display sizes from 15" to 24" and is fully customizable to meet your exact specifications.
MIL-STD-810G Certified for:
Other key features include high-resolution, 5+ USB connections, audio input/output, and a variety of keyboard/trackball/mouse options.

Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) is more than just quality assurance—it’s about ensuring your software systems do exactly what you need them to do, every single time.
Our IV&V process includes:
Our software development team offers a full suite of support for every stage of implementation, including embedded firmware development and software development in many technologies.
In addition to custom development, our team is also experienced in reverse engineering existing products to implement changes to embedded systems.
1) We can do all of the work and take over the complete Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)—or parts of it—and use the systems at our facility as an arm of your company.
2) We draw up a Facility Software Maintenance Agreement (FSMA) and set up remote systems at our clients’ facilities. This allows us to implement the proper systems, by installing and testing various applications including bug tracking, upgrade tracking, and overall quality tracking. All of which is customized around the particular needs of the customer.
3) A hybrid of 1 and 2. We can start one of the two processes mentioned above and then hand it over to the customer when they are ready. This is great for startups, or large, tenured companies dealing with the detailed paperwork, reporting, checks and balances that are expected for certification in medical and pharma by FDA accepted standard IEC 62304 and CGMP requirements part 820 (21 CFR part 820). It’s also great for the avionics indsutry, as the FAA will be expecting the same certifications to DO-178 standards.
