Description

Satellite technology has an integral, although overlooked, role to play in advancing the long-term success and adoption of autonomous vehicles. Autonomous technologies have created new opportunities for industries, organizations, & governments alike. Most are aware that autonomous vehicles require sensors, communication protocols, & software that enables them to safely self-navigate their environment. But, just like Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), autonomous vehicles require efficient & reliable communications to send & receive data & imagery, & to ensure that humans can remotely control the vehicles if needed. This has brought the topic of connectivity for autonomous operations to the forefront. However, traditional communication capabilities such as cellular fall short of the requirements of autonomous vehicles. With cellular connectivity only reaching 15% of the planet, technology developers need to find new ways to extend their reach beyond the limits of terrestrial infrastructure. Today, the only technology that can deliver globally reliable connectivity at high speeds and low latency is satellite. While Lower Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Orbit (GEO)satellite networks all surpass the limits of cellular coverage, LEO networks offer the lowest latency, greatest coverage, and most cost-effective solution for autonomous operations.
