Profile

Dr. Virginia (Suzy) Young, after retirement from the federal government (U.S. Army), was the Vice Chancellor for Research for the University of Alabama (UA System) where she worked with the Chancellor & the Board of Trustees, administrators & research faculty across the three campuses at the University of Alabama (UA), The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) & University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) to strengthen & broaden research initiatives & partnerships across the three universities. Currently she works solely in the Office for Research & Economic Development at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where she investigates research opportunities & critical partnerships for faculty & Research Centers, & is the Director for the Office of Proposal Development. Previously. Suzy worked for over 29 years in the United States Army Aviation & Missile Research, Development & Engineering Center (AMRDEC), Redstone Arsenal, AL in various leadership positions. Her early years included being a member of the initial robotics working group across R&D labs of the Army, & began the first efforts to prototype & test armed ground robots for Ft Benning Infantry School. Her work expanded to team with the Navy for a joint demonstration at Ft Lewis, WA for unmanned ground sentry & weapons firing demonstrations. She was the Chief Technical Officer for the first Army/Marine Corp Joint Unmanned Ground Vehicle Office at Redstone Arsenal. Later in her career she began efforts to support the Army’s UAV/UAS programs in research on programs such as Manned Unmanned Teaming & counter UAS. She was the Director for Army Aviation S&T programs, & the Technical Point of Contact for all International exchanges within the Army in the area of robotics. She has also worked for six years in industry & taught at Vanderbilt University for five years.
