Founder and Former Commodore – Task Force 59

Profile

Michael D. Brasseur serves as Chief Strategy Officer for Saab, Inc., a wholly owned US subsidiary of the leading Swedish defense and security company with an enduring mission, to help nations keep their people and society safe. As part of the executive management team, he is responsible for the development of the overall Saab Inc. business strategy and accountable (to the CEO) for the implementation of the company’s future capabilities strategy specifically focused on the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Autonomous Systems across the portfolio.

Prior to joining Saab, Inc., Michael co-founded and served as the first Commodore of Task Force 59, a first of it's kind organization dedicated to the rapid integration of robotics and artificial intelligence into 5th Fleet operations to deter malign activity and ensure the free flow of commerce in the waters surrounding the Arabian Peninsula. Task Force 59 continues to serve a model for innovation for the rapid adoption of dual-use tech to solve operational problems and has been emulated across the Navy (4th Fleet), the Joint Force (Army's Task Force 39 and the Air Force's Task Force 99) and soon potentially, NATO.  

Before arriving in Bahrain, Michael served as the Director, for Naval Armaments Cooperation at the U.S. Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the first Director of NATO’s “Start-up” the Maritime Unmanned Systems Innovation & Coordination Cell (MUSIC2).  MUSIC2 is the key integrator and accelerator for the NATO MUS Initiative (MUSI) which aims to enhance the Alliance’s capabilities through manned/unmanned teaming.  Additionally, he launched and co-chairs the NATO Maritime Unmanned Systems Innovation Advisory Board (IAB) which brings together an incredibly diverse and talented group of innovators, leaders and doers from around the world to provide advice to NATO on how best to improve, accelerate and scale the NATO MUS Initiative.
