Description

There are people in (or about to be in) the autonomy game that must lead or otherwise work/communicate with autonomy practitioners and could benefit from a walkthrough of what makes something autonomous, what ingredients are required and where the challenges are. A sub-theme is pointing out the role and implications of AI and Machine Learning. The benefits are learning some of the lingo and acronyms, understanding the touchpoints with people and other parts of the system/vehicle and appreciating what is required to operationalize an autonomous system. Participants have the opportunity to break into small teams to work through a Use-Case driven exercise to identify the autonomous perception, reasoning and behaviors needed for an autonomous system to accomplish its mission.

Learning Objectives:

Participants leave with

  • An expanded vocabulary and appreciation surrounding the engineering and use of autonomous systems
  • A broader understanding of the composition and facets of an autonomous system
  • Awareness of how AI and Machine Learning can both help and challenge an autonomous system
  • An appreciation of the hurdles faced by the adoption/operationalization of autonomous systems

Agenda:

  • Autonomy Basics (30 min)
  • Autonomy Types and Approaches (30 min)
  • The role and implications of AI/ML in Autonomous Systems (30 min)
  • Autonomous Systems Challenges (15 min)

 Break (15 min)

  • Breakouts to examine various autonomous system Use Cases and identify the needed sensors, reasoning and behaviors to accomplish the mission (45 min)
  • Present and Discuss Breakout Group Results (15 min)
